Building Your Own Workbench | The Foundation To Future Projects

December 16, 2017 by adminPO

Hello everyone, my name is Hunt Ethridge and welcome to my new column Hunt & Gather!  I love tools, I love creativity and I like combining the two.  Whether it’s designing and building something from scratch, rehabbing an old piece or upcycling a unique item for a new life, if I can get my hands dirty and make something, I’m a happy man! So today, I am going to be kicking off by explaining how I built my own workbench.

So my wife and I just bought and moved into our first adult house.  Living in the NYC metro area, it had only been apartments before that.  Needless to say, I was excited about all of the space and projects!

Well, before I could really start on any projects, I needed a work space and workbench.  So I decided to build one to the size and specifications I needed.  You can see below what my basement looked like. Luckily, I had a decent space to work with.

Tools used:

  • Power drill
  • Circular saw
  • Hammer
  • Large square
  • Triangle
  • Level
  • Clamps
  • Tape measure
  • Pencil

Supplies used:

  • (11) 2”x4”x6’s
  • 6’x3’x1” MDF board
  • 6’x2’x1” MDF board
  • 2 2’x4’ pegboards
  • Pegboard hooks and kit
  • Wood screws (2 ½” and 3”)

Building Your Own Workbench

Step #1: Designing the workbench

I grew up watching my dad work at his workspace.  And he also built my first workbench so I could do projects next to him.  Luckily my dad was in town, so we brainstormed about how we wanted it to look and what size it would be.  We sketched out some plans on my trusty graphing pad to get an idea of what we could do.  The finished product actually ended up looking pretty close to our original sketch!  (Don’t use these numbers, they are just guesses and thoughts!)

Step #2: Figuring out the materials needed

I like MDF boards because they are so smooth and solid so I wanted to use that as my work surface.  You could also use particle board or some other type of wood.  But make sure you get a smooth surface and that it’s solid as you’re going to be hammering and banging things for years!  I knew that I wanted to use peg board in the back to hang my tools on, so I needed 2 sheets of that.  Then I used 2x4s for the base and cross beams.  I needed 3 for the back supports and 4 for the cross beams.  Then 2 more for the front legs and another 2 for the supports.  I could have bought some 8’ pieces to cut down on waste, but I wanted to have some extra both in case something went wrong and to start a stockpile of scrap wood.

As a rule of thumb, I like to buy 10%-20% more material than I think I’ll need.  That way, you don’t need to keep running back to the store if you split a piece of wood or lose a few screws.

Step #3: Start laying out and marking the wood

When possible, I like to lay things down on the floor to get a sense of spacing and size and how they all fit together.  What’s right in planning doesn’t always look right in practice.  I wanted the level of the work space at 42” so I could easily work on it standing up (I’m 6’ tall) or while sitting on a stool.  Obviously if you are shorter or taller, find the height that works best for you.  Once you’ve got everything marked out and you’ve sort of visually pieced it together, it’s time to start cutting.

Step #4: Get outside structure built with legs, support and crossbeam

First I attached the back crossbeam to the two outside back support legs.  Now I have height and length set.  Next, I attached the supports to each leg and added the front legs.  To be safe, I only put 1 screw in the front legs while I used the square and level to double check my angles.  Once I was sure we were good, I attached the rest of the screws.  It is very helpful to have someone else to help you hold things in place while you’re measuring/attaching things.  Thanks dad!

Step #5:  Add the rest of the supports and beams

Added the third back leg and the top crossbeam.  Some people might think that you want the 2×4 flush up to the front to give the most support.  While structurally it makes more sense, you definitely want a lip/overhang on the front edge so that you can attach a vise, clamps or other tool.  I gave myself a lip on three sides.  I also laid the board “flatwise” for two reasons, 1) for more support and 2) to make it easier to attach to the surface (see step #7).  Front lip is 8 ½”, side lips are 3 ½”.  The bottom supports are where I am going to add a shelf.  They are 16” off of the floor.

Step #6: Measure desired depth of bottom shelf

I didn’t want the shelf to come all of the way out to the front as I imagined barking my shins on it and swearing up a storm.  So I decided on 19” deep shelf.  I still wanted a little lip, so I added the front crossbeam for the shelf 15” from the back edge.  Okay!  Now the base is built, time to start adding the surfaces.

Step #7:  Attaching the surfaces

For my top surface, I cut the board to 72”x 30”.  You don’t want much deeper as you’ll need to reach the back for your tools.  For the back edge, I screwed down into the 2×4 as I wasn’t going to use that inch for any real workspace, so I didn’t mind the screw heads.  For the front, I screwed up into the MDF to hold it in place (see photo.)  I wanted a smooth and unblemished area in the front with no screw heads.  I used 2 ½”, self-driving screws so I didn’t need to pre-drill any holes.

Step #8: Add the pegboard

I wanted to have the pegboard to be able to hang my tools on.  The pegboard came in sheets of 2’x4’, so I grabbed two of them.  The first one I put on its side, on the left of the bench.  I just simply screwed them into the 2x4s, nothing special.

Step #9: Measure and cut wood for shelves

You’ll want to have some little shelves for hardware, safety glasses, tape, pencils, etc.  You can build them any size that you want, that work best for you.  I decided on 4 shelves.  Using some of the leftover MDF (this is why I always overestimate!), I cut 4 shelves at about 18”x4 ½”.  As you can see, I’m already using the lips on the edge of the shelf to clamp the wood I’m cutting.  (Don’t be an idiot like me, always use safety glasses!)

Step #10: Install shelves and backing

Again, you can make the shelves any height that you wanted.  I wanted the bottom shelf to be able to accommodate spray paint cans, so I put the first shelf at 9 ¼”.  The rest I kind of eye-balled, but they’re ~4” – 5”.  Just screwed them in from the side of each 2×4.  For the backing, I used pegboard again.  It’s one piece, measured out and attached from the back, into the supporting 2x4s.

Step #11: Finish the top of the pegboard

Using the rest of the second sheet of pegboard, I cut a long piece to finish up the top of the backing.  My cat Brigit is inspecting my handiwork.  I think she approves!

Step #12: Add finishing touches

I mean, right?

Final Step: Hang up your tools and fill up your shelves

Enjoy the look of this because it will never look this neat and clean again!  One tip when buying the hooks and other hardware for your pegboard, get a magnetic strip!  It’s great to hold random things, small stuff and oddly shaped tools.  Also, I had a bunch of little containers that were in my tool box that I removed and added to the shelves.  Use whatever you want, but make sure you have a bunch for all the little things that you’ll use and need.

Another view:

A pulled back view of the whole workbench.  Already getting messy!

Building Your Own Workbench | The Foundation To Future Projects

What went wrong:

No project goes exactly the way you want it.  So I wanted to add this section to show you that we all have to make game-time fixes and help you look out for possible pitfalls.

  1. The floor nearest the wall was about an inch higher than the rest of the floor.  I could have cut the back legs an inch shorter or added shims underneath the front legs.  Instead, I just pulled it away from the wall a bit for a more level, more sturdy bench.
  2. I mis-measured one 2×4.  I was supposed to get two pieces out of it, instead I only got one.  No worries, that’s why I had an extra board on hand.  Mis-cut piece became scrap and will become part of another project someday.
  3. Getting back behind the bench to attach the small shelves and pegboard was problematic.  Also, as I was eye-balling it, I missed a screw or two.  Not too big a deal and easily fixable.

11 Awesome Garage Storage Ideas To Keep Your Tools Organized

October 14, 2017 by adminPO

Cabinets aren’t the only type of storage device you can build to deposit all your mechanic tools and household items. Tools just can’t lie around. But with new household equipment pouring in from fix after fix, it’s becoming more and more difficult to find a room to simply stock everything. Make the best use out of your space with these do-it-yourself garage storage ideas and maximize what you can do with the entire area–without having to spend so much as a few bucks!

11 Awesome Garage Storage Ideas To Keep Your Tools Organized

Back when I was still starting out on woodworking and other DIY projects, my tools had no place to go. They were just lying on the table, or on the ground, and sometimes, in the weirdest places, like the kitchen drawer. It took me quite a while to sort out and find ways to store my tools inside the garage. Believe me when I say that these storage ideas that I am about to show you really work and they can do wonders for your storage needs. Here are several garage storage ideas that you can use!

1. Overhead Storage

Image via Artsy Building Lady

Suspended shelving might just be for you if you’re planning to make use of every square foot of your garage. Normally used for tools not commonly used, shelves positioned overhead may accommodate those looking for better space.

2. Mounted Wall Rails

Image via DIY Network

Overhead storage may keep your bigger, less commonly-used tools stocked, but tools that are smaller need a more accessible and organized type of storage space. For a cost-effective and easy way of storing your commonly-used small tools, you may opt for mounted wall rails.

3. Hanging Jars

Image via Chez Larsson

For a more creative and cost-efficient storage of small materials such as nails, bits, and screws, use simple household materials to create hanging jars. Not only are they easy to make, they are easy to utilize as well, allowing easy access to the smallest tools of your DIY arsenal.

4. Tire Racks

Image via Small Town DJs

If you have spare tires that litter around your garage, making tire racks will perhaps be the most beneficial way to go for you, saving space that you can use for more cabinets and shelves.

5. Shelves

Image via HGTV

Shelves, shelves, good ole shelves. They never grow out of fashion for their obvious usability and ease-of-use. If you’re not too worried about space on the ground, a shelf is always an option.

6. Coat Hooks

Image via APMG

Coat hooks aren’t just for coats. Spare bags or dirty rags can be neatly arranged on coat hooks too. Coat hooks can give your garage not just a more usable space, but a nifty aesthetic feel as well.

7. Re-purpose

Image via Hometalk

The best (and most enjoyable) idea among these garage storage ideas would be to repurpose old, unused things at home to build your own garage storage device. Old plaster boards and unused hooks are great materials to use when making shelves, cabinets, or even vertical storage.

8. Jumbo Tape Dispenser

Image via Popular Woodworking

Remember those tape dispensers that you had lying around on your desk? Well, you can create your own tape dispenser for your garage! Think of it as an awesome way to keep track of where your tapes are and how much of them are left. You can check out how this was made right here.

9. Suspending sliding Storage System

Image via Family Handyman

Think of them as overhead drawers, if you will. A sliding storage system, like this one, can keep a lot of tools organized without taking up too much space. Let’s face it, we’ve all had to deal with cluttered boxes of stored tools, right? This suspending storage system is a must-have for every DIY enthusiast. Just make sure that the containers are durable and sturdy.

10. The Screwdriver Coat Rack

Image via Homemade Modern

DIY enthusiasts know what it’s like to lose a couple of screwdrivers, especially when you need them for certain projects. I can no longer count how many screwdrivers have come and gone inside my workshop. Either the magical screwdriver fairy took them away or I have a bad habit of forgetting Where I placed them. This screwdriver coat rack is going to help you keep your screwdrivers together while saving tons of shelf and drawer space.

11. Truss Shelves

Image via Ana White

This is an amazing way to store tools because it not only serves its purpose, but it also adds a dash of minimalism to your garage. The slanting design of truss shelves allows you to store your items without the shelves looking like a complete eyesore. Think of it as a pyramid. You can sort out your most commonly used tools by placing them on the bottom shelf and the least used tools on the top.

To help you out with organizing your tools, I suggest you list down everything beforehand. This will help you decide on which of these garage storage ideas would be best for them.

Young House Love Must-Try DIY | Rustic Centerpiece Box

October 9, 2017 by adminPO

If you’re a dedicated DIYer, you must’ve already heard about Young House Love, but if you haven’t, they’re actually one of the most influential DIY, home decorating and home improvement bloggers to check out.  And I got my hands on their DIY rustic centerpiece box project in time for my fall decorating. I’m sure you’ll enjoy this as much as I did!

Young House Love | How To Make A Centerpiece Box

I love the fall holiday season, and of course having a great project to go with it makes it even more perfect. You can imagine how excited I was when I found this elegant rustic centerpiece box. It’s a very versatile DIY and highly customizable to fit any season. Super easy to make, any DIYer can put this together in no time and be ready for decorating. Let’s get started!

What You’ll Need:

Tools:

  • Tape Measure
  • Pencil
  • Miter Saw
  • Clamps
  • Sanding Block
  • Drill/Driver/Screwdriver

Materials:

  • 1 6 Ft. Piece Of 1×4
  • Wood Glue
  • Wood Stain
  • Paint Brush
  • Rag
  • 8  Pieces Corner Braces
  • 3 Mason Jars
  • Chalkboard Spray Paint
  • Drop Cloth/Cardboard
  • Styling Items

How To Make A Centerpiece Box:

Step 1: Measure And Cut The Wood

Carefully measure and cut the wood accordingly. In this project, you’ll need 5 pieces to form the box. Two longer sides measure 20″ each, two smaller sides measure 3 3/8″ each, and a bottom piece measures 18 1/2″.

Step 2: Assemble The Box

Before putting together the wood pieces to form the box, sand the edges to ensure it looks finished. Then, lay down the bottom piece, attach the 2 smaller pieces on both ends, and then attach the two longer sides. Once you’re satisfied with how they look, glue the pieces together, clamp it in place, and let it dry.

Step 3: Spray Paint The Mason Jars

Spray paint the mason jars with chalkboard paint. Remove the mason jar lids and set aside upside down, to make sure you don’t get any spray paint inside and the whole outside will get properly coated.

Step 4: Stain The Box

Once you’re sure that glue has dried, remove the clamps and apply some stain onto the box. You can use a brush or a rag to apply the stain. Once you have the entire box covered, let it sit for a couple of minutes to allow the stain to soak in, then wipe it off with a rag.

Tip: The longer you let the stain settle the deeper your color will be.

Step 5: Install Corner Braces

Install corner braces on each corner just to add a little hardware to the box and make it look more finished. Also, if the seams aren’t perfect, the braces will cover that. Your box is now ready!

Step 6: Decorating

My favorite part, decorating! Put a tea light inside your mason jars and place the mason jars inside your box. Once you light up the tea light your mason jars will look like a mercury glass. Add a bit of greenery outside to boost its beauty or you can simply decorate it with any fall theme decor you have in mind and make it shine for the season.

Talk about an affordable, unique, and stylish home decor project that gives you unlimited possibilities for decorating! This is surely a must-try DIY to add a bit wow factor to your home! Good luck!

DIY Garage Storage Shelves to Maximize Space

October 3, 2017 by adminPO

These DIY garage storage shelves are a brilliant way to maximize storage space. Check out this tutorial to help organize your garage clutter.

DIY Garage Storage Shelves: It Won’t Use Up Floor Space

My husband, Dave, loves our DIY garage storage shelves because they give us another way to organize and store our things without sacrificing floor space. I’ve got to say, these shelves are definitely one of the best hacks when it comes to maximizing space.

Here’s what you’ll need to make DIY Garage Storage Shelves:

  • 2×4 boards
  • 3/4” plywood panels
  • Miter saw or hand saw
  • 3” decking screws
  • Wood glue

Reminders to make the DIY Garage Storage Shelves:

  • Ensure the structure of your garage can handle the weight.
  • Although it may look like extra work, adding the cleats in will help ensure your boards are straight and leveled.

Step 1: Measure the Area for the Shelves

Measure the area where you want the shelves to be. For this tutorial, a 2×2 board will be placed on the wall. Take note, this will be the height of your shelf. Another 2×2 board will be placed on the ceiling to mark the distance of how long you want the shelf to extend from the wall.

Step 2: Cut the Wood into 2×2 Boards

Get your 2×4 boards and make a mark in the middle to get them to 2×2 measurements. Once you’ve done this, proceed to cutting with either a miter saw or a hand saw.

Step 3: Do Accurate Measuring Using the 2×2 Boards

Measure out how long you’d want your DIY garage storage shelves to be. To do this, you can simply hold the board against the wall to eyeball where it will be cut. Don’t forget to leave a small mark on the board to help you know where to cut.

Step 4: Cut The Boards Into Necessary Pieces

Once you’ve got the sizes of your shelves settled, go back to your handy miter saw or hand saw and cut the pieces according to the marks you’ve just placed in step 3.

Step 5: Place Cleats

Having cleats up on the wall will make installing the shelves much easier. Simply cut a piece of scrap board and then cut out a notch at the end for the molding. Hold the cleats in place with 3” deck screws. Once you’re sure the screws have gone into every wall stud behind the drywall, remove the cleats.

Step 6: Install Ceiling Boards

It’s best to look for the appropriate joist first. Don’t forget to ensure the ceiling board is parallel with the back wall before driving the screws in.

Step 7: Prepare the Vertical Boards

Measure the distance from your ceiling board going down to where the bottom of the shelf will be. Once you’ve got the measurements, cut the boards accordingly and pre-drill the ends.

Step 8: Put The Vertical Boards

Since you’ve already pre-drilled the ends, attach the vertical boards to the 2×2 ceiling board with 2 3” decking screws and some wood glue.

Tip: Drill 2 screws per connection.

Step 9: Attach The Floating Boards

Here’s a nifty trick to installing the floating board: Screw a scrap block onto one of the vertical boards as a pretend shelf. Proceed with attaching your floating boards and then remove the scrap board once done.

Step 10: Install Shelf Bottom

Cut your panels to size, then slide the shelf panel in. Prevent it from budging by drilling in some screws. Don’t worry, you won’t need to drill a lot of times. A handful of screws is enough.

And there you have it! You’re now a proud owner (and not to mention, builder) of your very own DIY garage storage shelves.

Dave likes keeping his toolboxes on these shelves. To be honest, we still have a lot of room left. We’ve only occupied two shelves so far.

I sure hope these DIY garage storage shelves inspired you to make the most out of your ceiling space. I know I sound like a broken record, but these overhead compartments are lifesavers for organizing, I swear.

8 DIY Hacks To Make Your Woodworking Projects Easier

October 2, 2017 by adminPO

Looking for DIY hacks for your woodworking projects? If you consider yourself a craftsmen (or craftswomen) you’ve probably picked up your own tricks of the trade, but there’s always more to be learned! I’ve rounded up some DIY hacks straight from pro woodworkers. Are we missing any? Let us know in the comments below.

8 DIY Hacks To Make Your Woodworking Projects Easier

Woodworking projects are not easy. I am just putting it out there. The time it takes for you to prepare, cut, measure, polish, and stain can be overwhelming for anyone. Thankfully for you, there are some DIY hacks to help cut your time short, leaving you with plenty of time for another task, or that much closer to finishing before sundown…

DIY Hack #1: Use a nail as a drill bit.

Image via Galvanized Nails

Remove the nail’s head then put it in your drill. This will make a great substitute to your drill bit in making a pilot hole. You can use different sizes of nails depending on your need.

DIY Hack #2: Use a metal straight edge to tear wax paper.

If you can’t find your scissors, you can still cut wax paper or any other paper just by tearing it with a metal straight edge. Just hold the metal straight edge down and pull the paper. Wax paper helps to prevent your working surface not to get glue on.

DIY Hack #3: Create your own instant clamp.

If you don’t have clamps to hold glued wood together, this trick can do wonders. Grab some scrap wood pieces and screw them down on a surface just a little bit wider than the actual size. Put wax paper underneath, place the pieces of wood, then insert wedges to tighten it. You now have a pair of clamps.

DIY Hack #4: Use table salt to avoid glued wood from sliding around.

Image via insidescience

More often than not, your wood will slide around after applying wood glue, making it hard for you to keep them aligned. To prevent sliding, put a small amount of table salt. Don’t worry, it will not affect the adhesion.

DIY Hack #5: Cut C – shaped wood pieces to serve as clamps.

In the event that you run out of clamps, you can make some out of wood with a mouth wider than the one you are clamping. You can also cut pieces of wood and attach them together. Measure the wood that you will clamp and make sure that the mouth of your wood clamp is larger.

DIY Hack #6: Drill a perfect 90 – degree hole with a piece of scrap.

Take a piece of scrap wood, and cut out a corner. That will make a 90 – degree angle. Rest your drill bit in there and that’s it! If you can’t cut a corner, you can just join two pieces of dimensional lumber with straight, nice edges that will also form a 90 – degree when you stack them together.

DIY Hack #7: Sharpen your knife with a coffee cup.

Make sure you’ve finished your coffee before doing this. Flip your coffee cup over and use the bottom rim as a sharpening tool for your utility knife. It also works for almost every type of knife. Make sure you use a ceramic cup for this.

DIY Hack #8: Dab some toothpaste over a small wall hole.

Apply some toothpaste on a small hole on your wall and let it sit for an hour or two, and then you can paint over it. No need for cement to fill in those small holes.
