21 DIY Room Decor Ideas for Crafters (Who Are Also Renters)

November 10, 2017 by adminPO

These DIY room decor ideas will bring life into the room you’re renting! After all, DIYers still need to find a way to get their craft on, right?

Simple DIY Room Decor Ideas For A Homey Apartment

Get your creativity on even if the space you call your room isn’t technically yours. These DIY room decor ideas are my secrets to crafting and decorating when renting. Trust me, you’ll have a Pinterest-worthy room after all these DIYs.

1. DIY Fun Cork Board

image via Un Vent De Mode

Hang your favorite photos and reminders on this fun and quirky cork board. Simply cut out a pineapple shape from your cork board, and draw different sizes of triangles. Then, grab a paintbrush and add a bit of green on top, and use a yellow color for some of the triangles.

2. Jewelry Holder

I love how you can use either wooden dowels or toilet paper rolls for this DIY jewelry holder. Using the latter definitely gives you a few plus points for upcycling, which in turn, helps save the Earth.

3. DIY Clothing Rack

image via A Beautiful Mess

If you’re planning on assembling and disassembling this clothing rack a lot, I suggest doing this project without using wood glue. Be careful not to overload the rack as well by only placing items you’re planning to wear for the week.

4. Mason Jar Makeup Brush Holders

Give your makeup brushes a new home by decorating a mason jar with gold spray paint and glitter. By the way, when spray painting, remember to do this outside. That way, you won’t make a mess in your room.

5. Watercolor Clock

image via Makers Society

Don’t forget to measure the clock hands for your watercolor clock. You’ll want the base of the clock to be larger than the hands. By the way, when painting, it’s always better to start with the lighter color.

6. Dreamcatcher

Remember to pull tight on the knot before moving to another section of the dream catcher. Doing so will ensure your dream-catcher won’t sag and look poorly made.

7. Faux Cactus

image via Salt And Pepper Moms

Scared you won’t be able to keep a plant alive, but still want some greenery in your room? Make a faux cactus room accent. Start by choosing different sizes of rocks and paint on them using green and white paint. You can even come up with different shades of green by mixing the two colors.

8. Gem Mirror

image via A Beautiful Mess

I’ve found thin lines to look the best for this gem mirror. If you want to follow the thickness of the contact paper placed on the mirror, measure out 1/8” on each side of the lines. Doing so will give you a thickness of 1/4”.

9. String Light Decor

image via Hey Gorgeous

The beauty of string lights is they’re so easy to manipulate. If you place them in enclosed spaces such as paper cups, they’ll instantly turn into makeshift lanterns as well.

10. DIY Succulent Pot

image via Apartment Therapy

Don’t forget to use waterproof glue for your succulent pot. Doing so will ensure your craft withstands all the spills from when you water the plant.

11. Bubbly Lava Lamp

image via Juggling With Kids

You probably already have the main ingredients of the lava lamp in the kitchen or pantry. If you don’t, simply go to the nearest supermarket and grab some vegetable oil, water, and Alka-seltzer. While you’re there, don’t forget to grab food coloring too.

12. Fabric Covered Styrofoam Balls

image via DIY Projects

These fabric covered styrofoam balls look so intricate, but in reality, the fabric isn’t even sewn on. The secret lies in using a bunch of pins to secure the fabric pieces in place.

13. Fabric Quote Banner

image via Homemade Ginger

Don’t forget to cut the fabric bigger than what you’d like the banner to measure. Remember, you’ll still be sewing the edges to make the seams.

14. Gold Trimmed Vase

image via DIY Projects

Flowers will look absolutely gorgeous in this luxe gold trimmed vase. The straight lines of paint are made by sticking on strips of tape on the glass, and spraying on the gold paint. Once the paint is dry, simply remove the tape.

15. Tape Picture Frames

image via Design Sponge

Display your favorite photos even if your landlord says you can’t drill holes into the walls for picture frames. All you have to do is place strips of tape to outline your photos. That’s all it takes!

16. Decorative Pillows

image via DIY Projects

Make your pillows more unique by adding a bit of flair to them. Personally, I’m a sucker for pompom pillows because they look so cute! It’s hard to resist playing with the little pompoms on the sides as well.

17. Ikea Hack Floating Shelves

image via A Bubbly Life

Love Ikea, but wish there was something you could to make it more “you”? Grab some contact paper and DIY your favorite Ikea buy! You won’t even need much for this project.

18. String Orbs

image via Her Campus

Hang these string orbs from the ceiling to give you something to look at while you’re lying in bed. Get creative by blowing up the balloons in different sizes for one of a kind orbs.

19. Dotted Wall

image via Fellow Fellow

This is a great project for those who can’t get enough washi tape. If you’ve got a drawer of differently designed washi tape rolls, you may want to try this dotted wall for your room.

20. Storage Ottoman

image via Mon Makes Things

Need extra storage space? Make a storage ottoman to help you organize your things. Don’t forget to attach wheels on the bottom to prevent scratches on the floor.

21. Candle Holder

image via Make Zine

DIY a stained glass effect with your candle holders. Simply attach different sheets of colored paper to your glass using a coat of Mod Podge. You can even punch out designs on the paper to make it look more artistic.

Yes, my DIY-loving friends, it still is possible to get crafting even if you’re renting a room. Who knows? Your landlord might even love what you’ve done with the place that they’ll get you to do a few projects for them as well.

18 Amazing IKEA Hacks For Chic And Functional Pieces

November 5, 2017 by adminPO

DIY Desk Under $These Ikea hacks will give you more reasons to love your recent furniture haul! Trust me, you’ll get more bang for your buck with these cool ideas.

Ikea Hacks Everyone Needs To Know

Just like you, I love a good Ikea shopping spree. But most of the time, I like switching up the items I buy with a few changes here and there. Not only does it increase a furniture’s function, but it adds a bit of personality as well.

1. Industrial Kitchen Island

image via Oliver And Rust

Give your kitchen island an industrial feel by painting it in a dark gray color. If you’d like, you can also up its stylish factor by placing a marble top and attaching brass towel holders on the side.

2. Geometric Cork Coasters

Give your coasters a new look by cutting them into hexagon shapes — don’t forget, it’s the shape with 6 sides. Take note of this when you mark your coaster before cutting.

3. Dresser Turned Rolling Desk

image via In My Own Style

Give your Ikea dresser a makeover by turning it into a rolling desk you can use in the bedroom or home office. Don’t forget to hide the drawer glides by attaching a thin piece of wood. If you’d like, you can also hide them using iron-on wood veneers.

4. Gold and Marble Shelves

Glam up an ordinary Ikea shelf by applying gold spray paint and adding a touch of marble. Don’t worry, the marble won’t even cost you that much because it’s simply contact paper stuck onto the shelf.

5. Chair Makeover

image via Little Green Notebook

Give your Ikea chair a whole new look with the help of a Sharpie. It’s so easy to do. Simply grab your Sharpie and place spots all over your chair. That’s it!

6. Painted Sideboard

image via The Sweet Beast Blog

The trick to having clean paint lines on the sideboard’s legs is to place strips of tape to mark your painting area. Doing so will allow you to paint over the table without worrying about going over the marked space.

7. Laptop Table Turned Bar Cart

image via Style Me Pretty

Turn this laptop table into the bar cart of your hostess dreams. What I love about this project is how it automatically gives you an extra storage compartment — perfect for all those books on mixology and cocktail recipes.

8. Bookshelves Turned Kitchen Storage

image via Golden Boys & Me

Would you believe this kitchen storage piece was made with a few bookshelves? Aside from attaching the pieces with some drill work, you can also place a butcher’s block on top. Doing so will keep the shelves packed tightly together.

9. Gold Desk

image via Just Bella

Most of my friends know I’m a little obsessed with gold spray paint. I can’t help it. It instantly makes everything look so stylish! For this project, it’s important to spray the legs first before proceeding with the actual table assembly. That way, you won’t have to worry about the gold paint streaking on the white table top.

10. DIY Desk Under $60

image via Pretty Providence

Aside from its price tag, what I love about this DIY desk is how it makes use of 2 bookshelves from Target — another favorite store of mine. Don’t forget to measure where you’ll be placing the bookshelves — it’s best to ensure they’re placed on opposite ends.

11. Improved Cabinet

image via Arty Home Studio

Add slim black handles for an improved cabinet for your home. Trust me when I say these handles have saved my nails from breaking countless times.

12. West Elm Inspired Dresser

image via Kristina Lynne

Make your bedroom dresser more luxurious with this West Elm inspired Ikea hack. By the way, don’t forget to stain the wood first and let this dry before applying the white paint.

13. Hanging Organizer

image via Ich Designer

Who would’ve thought bed slats could be repurposed as hanging organizers? If you need a bit of help hanging your storage compartments, simply grab an S-hook and place this in between the slats.

14. Side Table Turned Ottoman

image via Interiors By Kenz

Turn an extra side table into an ottoman you can have a guest sit on. By the way, I recommend choosing a foam that’s about 2 inches thick. This way, your ottoman will still be comfortable without being too bouncy.

15. Vase Turned Lamp

image via Koft Projekt

All you have to do to turn a vase into a lamp is to drill a hole at the bottom of the vase, insert your cable through the hole, connect the lamp base to the cable, and attach the bulb in place at the mouth of the vase.

Tip: Use an adhesive to hold the bulb in place.

16. Cage Light Sconces

image via Nalle’s House

I’ve always admired the designs of Ikea’s different accessories. Why not put them to good use and show them off by hanging them upside down to make DIY cage light sconces? They’ll definitely make a statement decor item.

17. Clothing Hamper Turned Side Table

image via The Clever Bunny

Repurpose an old clothing hamper’s legs into a side table. All you’ll need are the legs, some spray paint, a wooden board cut to the size of your hamper’s legs, and some wood stain. That’s it!

18. Faux Fur Stool

Remember to place the fabric on the stool seat before attaching the seat to the stool’s legs. Also, don’t forget to leave a 1-inch allowance when cutting your fabric. This will help you tuck in the fabric snugly. Attach this to the bottom of the seat with the help of a hot glue gun.
