DIY Secret Shelf Project | How to Hide Your Valuables

November 28, 2017 by adminPO

Keep your important items such as jewelry, cash, documents and gun safe inside this DIY secret shelf you can easily build!

Safely Stash Your Valuables In This DIY Secret Shelf

You can upgrade a decorative floating shelf you have at home, and equip it with a secret compartment. You can keep whatever valuables you want to be hidden. Like emergency money, your passport, or shockingly even a weapon to be invisible from an untrained eye! Are you ready to get started? Here we go!

What You’ll Need:

Tools:

  • Circular Saw
  • Drill
  • Clamps
  • Hammer
  • Arm Saw

Supplies:

  • Reclaimed Wood
  • Plywood
  • Wood Glue
  • Nails
  • Hinges
  • Screws
  • Magnetic Lock
  • Veneer
  • Latch
  • Gun Holster
  • Velcro

How To Make A DIY Secret Shelf:

Step 1: Joint Down And Glue

Trim down the sides of the shelf when making the top and bottom panels. Make sure they will fit in properly. Glue the panels together and keep them in place with a clamp. Let them dry overnight. That’s roughly around 10-12 hours.

Tip: Letting the glue dry completely will ensure its strength.

Step 2: Plane And Smooth Out

Tidy up the reclaimed wood you have collected, by smoothing it out with a Jack Plane.

Step 3: Actual Box

Use your arm saw to cut the plywood into the correct lengths of your secret box compartment. Now you will need to create the box joints. This is an essential part of the box since these are used to attach the four corners of the box and give it strength.

First connect the wood parts together by using glue. Once this is done you will want to secure the adhesion by hammering in nails.

Step 4: Attach The Hinges

Lay out the center points for the location where the hinges will be placed. Next, drill out holes and attach the hinges with screws.

Step 5: Panels

Yank the top and bottom panels a bit, to perfectly fit the splines together, and then glue. Then you will cut it to the required length and attach it to the box with glue and nails. Chisel out some portions of the wood, so as not to hit the wall when it is opened.

Step 6: Compartment Holders

If you have an emergency weapon like a gun, attach the gun holster with the help of a little latch as its holder. Attach the velcro with the use of screws to hold other items.

Step 7: Magnetic Lock And Key

Put the magnetic lock in the compartment by using more screws. Create a magnetic key out of an ordinary-looking decor.

Step 8: Put It Up On The Wall

And now you’re good to go!

Now that you have your very own secret compartment floating shelf, your next challenge is how to KEEP IT SECRET. This kind of woodwork is hard not to brag about, believe me! So I guess, you better keep your lips sealed, and just make more of our DIY Projects you can add to your bragging rights then!

How To Make Wood Look Old For An Even More Rustic Look

November 27, 2017 by adminPO

Want to know how to make wood look old? If you work on a lot of woodworking projects, distressing wood is an important skill you should master. Find out how to distress wood with this easy to follow tutorial.

Blending new wood right along with reclaimed wood is a big part of my job, and I love the challenge. When I am building a piece using both new and reclaimed wood, it is crucial that the new wood does not stick out like a sore thumb. Fortunately, there are simple ways how to make wood look old and below are my favorites.

1. Beat The Wood With Blunt Object

What you’ll need:

  • Wood File
  • Paint Can Opener
  • Nail Hole Punch
  • Chain
  • Rocks
  • Wood burner
  • Fork

Directions: The first step to making new wood look old is taking things around your kitchen and garage to replicate the markings of use over years and years. Old reclaimed wood has all sorts of really cool ways of showing its age: saw blade marks, rusted nail holes, worm trails, hardware imprints, anything that tells the story of its life, so to speak. Our task is to recreate those stories.

2. Oxidizing The Wood

In addition to beating the crap out of it with all sorts of odd tools and objects, I often oxidize the wood.

Oxidizing wood is a way of speeding up the aging process. Instead of waiting for years in the sun and snow for Mother Nature to take effect, try this way of adding color to your wood.

What you’ll need:

  • Paint Brushes
  • Mason Jars
  • Black tea
  • Vinegar
  • Steel Wool

Directions:

  • Brush the wood with strong black tea, let dry. The wood gets darker as it reacts with the tea and brings out the natural tones in the wood. Wait until it fully dries to see what color you have, and if you want a darker shade, add another coat!
  • Soak a piece or two of steel wool in a jar of vinegar for at least three (3) days. Pull the steel wool apart to loosen the fibers and allow the vinegar to penetrate quicker. The longer it soaks, the darker the color the wood will become.
  • Paint on the vinegar solution like you would with any other paint and watch the wood turn darker right before your eyes. It takes a good 15-20 for the color to fully change, so wait for it to dry before deciding if it needs another coat.
  • Seal with polyurethane or add a layer of stain if you would like a different color added to it.

I use cheap chip brushes for both the tea and the vinegar. It all washes out easily with warm soapy water.

Test your vinegar solution on a scrap piece of the same wood you are using for your project. Use the same type of wood when testing. Different wood holds varying levels of tannin, which is what reacts with the vinegar/steel wool mixture. The same strength solution can make a pine board just barely brownish, while a hardwood pallet board can go jet black. It’s crazy stuff!

This is how your wood will look like once it’s dry.

If you would like a different color, follow the guidelines for the color you are trying to achieve:

  1. For a darker shade of the same color: Shake the jar and wait longer for the vinegar to break down the steel wool (3-4 days, then test again)
  2. For a lighter color: Add more vinegar. Add just a 1/2 cup at a time until you have the color you want
  3. For a warmer color: Use Apple Cider vinegar
  4. For a colder color: Use white vinegar
  5. For a browner color: Use two coats of the strong tea before applying the vinegar

I have also added tea over some wood that I oxidized and let dry. I liked the color, just wanted it to be a little richer and deeper, so I brushed some more tea over the wood and it turned the wood just slightly darker.

Some Things To Remember:

  • Do not store brewed tea for longer than 1-2 days, its molds quickly! Yuck!
  • Once you are happy with your color, it’s time to seal it! For projects that I am trying to make look old and weather, I use Rustoleum’s satin polyurethane, it does not have much of a sheen to it, so it looks natural.
  • To recreate rusty nail holes, use a wood burner and nail hole punch. First punch a hole in the wood as far down as you would like so that the hole is big enough to look like a nail was once there, and has been removed. Then take a wood burning tool and a fine point tip and darken the area surrounding the nail hole

Want to see how to use the top 4 distressing tools? Check out this video from Zach Speet:

That’s it! This takes a little prep time to get the right color (letting the vinegar soak for a few days) but it’s so worth the weathered results! As you can imagine, the smell of this process takes a bit to get used to. The vinegar is pretty potent! Do this in a well-ventilated area, or with a fan to move the air around. I’ve found that once the solution dries, and you seal it with the polyurethane, the smell is hardly noticeable.

7 Chic DIY Bathroom Vanity Ideas For Her

November 25, 2017 by adminPO

I’ve got a DIY bathroom vanity solution for 7 different bathroom problems. If you need a quick fix or a budget hack, then this is perfect for you.

DIY Bathroom Vanity Solutions For Every Problem

A DIY bathroom vanity lets you gain control of your bathroom. It’s wonderful because you get to custom build it according to your preferences and limitations. Got a small bathroom space? DIY a small but stylish vanity. Working on a budget? Build something for only $100. My saying is, there’s always a DIY answer to every problem. Here are my 7 DIY bathroom vanity solutions:

1. Small But Stylish

Image via Shades of Blue Interiors

Have a small bathroom space? This small but stylish DIY bathroom vanity measures less than 25” wide, but it’s still a beauty! Also, if you don’t currently have a mirror attached to your bathroom vanity, take a tip from the photo above. You can simply go to the store and choose an affordable mirror of your liking.

2. Dresser Turned Vanity

Image via An Oregon Cottage

Been aching to overhaul a dresser into a DIY bathroom vanity? It’s possible! Just a heads up, before you start your project, begin by getting your dresser top’s measurements. That way, when you buy the sink, you’d pick one in the right size.

3. $100 DIY Vanity

Image via H2O Bungalow

Stuck on a budget? This $100 budget DIY bathroom vanity uses scrap wood and features an open shelf. If you choose to get straight boards from Home Depot, make sure the ones you purchase aren’t warped or bowed, otherwise you’ll be wasting money.

4. Ikea Hack

Got a used Ikea dresser you want to DIY? Turn into a bathroom vanity. What I love about this design is how it hides the plumbing fixtures from plain sight. Definitely saves you the eyesore of seeing them peek through from under the sink.

5. Maple Stained

Image via Domestic Imperfection

Want to give your maple wood countertop a nice dark chestnut color? The trick to getting maple wood to stain well is using a pre-stain before putting on your coats of wood finish. It makes such a huge difference in the outcome, I swear.

6. A Quick Fix

Image via It All Started With Paint

Need a quick fix to take your bathroom vanity from drab to fab? Sometimes a quick paint job is all it takes. Before you begin painting, remove the faucet and thoroughly clean the sink and countertop. I highly suggest using painter’s tape on the areas you don’t want to get painted as well.

7. Rustic Top

Image via Shark Tails

Been meaning to give your countertop a more rustic feel? Makeover your bathroom your bathroom vanity’s top with some wood and Waterlox. Waterlox is a sealer that penetrates through the wood, which gives it more protection. Each coat needs to dry for a full 24 hours, so you may need to wait for at least 5 days before you use your new bathroom vanity.

Here’s Jaé Marie’s Pottery Barn-inspired video tutorial of a DIY bathroom vanity:

I sure hope I was able to answer your DIY bathroom vanity problems! Now, there’s no need to feel confined and helpless because of your bathroom’s limitations. As long as you’re up for a DIY challenge, you’ll be able to work with any space and budget!

5 DIY Home Improvement Projects

November 21, 2017 by adminPO

When it comes to improving our homes, many of us within the modern world are without the skill sets that would have been common even a generation ago, such as working with two by fours or sewing our own clothes. Work — even the kind that used to be done my most people on a Saturday afternoon — has become so highly specialized that even tinkering has become a lost art.

For the resolute DIYer, however, the reality that the times have changed is little more than a challenge to recover what has been lost. If you have projects around your house that you’d like to take on, rest assured that there is plenty you can tackle yourself, regardless of your experience thus far. Save yourself some money, rack up some rewards points on your credit card and bask in the wonderful feeling of self reliance.

1. Paint Unsightly Floors

Painting floors

Whether your hardwood has seen better days, or you’re living with linoleum that makes you feel like you’re caught inside a terrible time warp, the desire to change what’s underfoot is an almost universal one among homeowners. And, when you haven’t the time, money, or know-how to really rehab or transform your floors, you can begin to believe you’re stuck with them.

While it may seem unorthodox at the outset, one quick and attractive fix is to paint floors that look bad. All you need to do is clean them well, lightly sand them, and tape off the walls or baseboards. Be sure to use a paint that’s made to endure being walked on, and use a high-quality roller or brush. Bright white or a bold, solid color both work well, but you can also tape off designs and take a two- or three-tone approach.

Whatever you choose, be daring. If you don’t like the way it turns out, you can always just paint it again.

2. Improve Ye Old Front Door

There are a number of ways you can improve your front door depending on the amount of money you have to spend, and the amount of time you have to commit to the project. If you’re short on either or both, simply choose a vibrant color and a high-quality paint and, after preparing the surface properly, get to work painting your front door. You’ll instantly feel like you’ve upgraded your home every time you step through it.

If you have a little more time and money to devote after painting it, look into upgrading your door’s hardware. From vintage locks and handles to brushed nickel or stainless steel, changing out hardware take a bit more time and effort, but it can add a classy look where before there was just pragmatism.

3. Switch Out Faucets

From the kitchen to the bathrooms, faucets are an essential part of cleaning, cooking, and being clean, and over time, they can wear out or simply begin to look dated. Without reinventing the wheel, find replacement faucets that will fit the sinks and holes occupied by the ones you have now.

Grab your tools, a free afternoon, and watch a YouTube video or two. With a little time and focus, you’ll have the new hardware up and running in no time.

4. Update Light Fixtures

While true electrical work is best left to a professional, you can easily update light fixtures with little more than the wherewithal to turn off a breaker. Transform your dining room’s pendant light into a mini chandelier. Change out ceiling fixtures in bedrooms and bathrooms with vintage pieces, flea market finds, or department store clearance gems. Then, pull all your breakers back into the “On” position, and run from room to room switching on every gloriously new light in your house.

5. Go for Curb Appeal

One of the easiest ways to upgrade the looks of your home is to focus for a moment — or a weekend — on improving its curb appeal. Step into the street and face your house. How’s the lawn? The landscaping? Are there toys, tools, broken steps, hanging shutters, or anything else in your view that seems out of place?

Whatever you see that takes away from the inherent good looks of your home, get to work setting it aright. While some aspects of curb appeal require little more than cleaning up, others take time and effort. Repair hanging or missing shutters or trim. Paint your mailbox if it’s looking drab. Clear out flower beds of dead and dying detritus, and break out the edger for the tufts of grass at the edges of your sidewalk. In every way you can, make your home’s exterior a domain of calm tidiness. Then, commit to maintaining it.

Upgrading your home is one of the most rewarding ways a homeowner can spend her time, and it doesn’t have to require the skills of a master carpenter in order for the improvements to be noticeable.

5 DIY Ideas for the Bedroom

November 19, 2017 by adminPO

Designing the room where you spend so much of your time — reading, sleeping, watching television, snuggling your pets and loved ones — can be quite a challenge. Sometimes it’s hard to even know where to start!

Some interior design experiments inevitably yield disastrous and aesthetically unappealing results. You can spend hundreds of dollars on decor, and things still might not look quite right right. But don’t worry, guidance is here! We’ve collected five great “on trend” DIY ideas to spruce up your bedroom. And best of all, these DIY ideas won’t take a huge toll on your wallet.

1. Gold is in!

The color gold is making a comeback this year. It is visually appealing and ensures a “wow factor” in any room. But gold is also versatile enough to pair with any background paint color or furniture. The trend nowadays is to incorporate something gold colored in a room, no matter what it is. An example would be a gold vase to light up a dull-looking bedroom. If you do not want some over-the-top gold accessory in the bedroom, make subtle changes, such as replacing door knobs or closet handles with gold.

2. Minerals, anyone?

Minerals such as sand, ceramic, stone, marble and other natural elements are frequenting trendy homes today. These minerals are made into serving canisters, vases, bowls and even wall art. They are very unique pieces worth displaying in a room. It’s also quite refreshing to bring nature into the comfort of your own bedroom.

3. Wallpaper is love

Wallpaper used to be limited to beige colors and other plain and drab designs. But now, they seem to be getting better and prettier. Say hello to rich and vibrant-colored ones that are guaranteed to liven up a room in an instant, particularly the bedroom. If you do not want to do the whole room, you can always limit it to one part of the wall and just make it an accent wall instead. There are also wall decals available that are just as lovely, which you can stick up on the walls, if you are not that adventurous.

4. Pretty pastels

Pastels, like muted pinks, greys and blues, are great for bathroom walls. They have a relaxing and calming effect that’s perfect when you’re reading, trying to catch some Z’s or soaking in the master bedroom’s adjacent tub. Refrain from using busy colors in the bedroom, as they can prevent you from relaxing and winding down after a stressful day.

5. Mix & match

The mixing of different patterns, textures and styles are great if you want to create a strong impact in a room. As long as you know how to do it right, everything will fall into place. Take small steps like mixing metallics with wood first. Next, you can try playing with fabrics like putting florals and geometric designs together. These would be great for pillows or quilts as it enhances the room by making it more feminine and classy at the same time.

These five easy DIY ideas are just a few of the hundred things you can do to decorate your room. You do not have to be an artist to come up with something creative for the bedroom! There is a limitless supply of great furniture, pretty fabrics, ingenious wall art, paints and other odd knick-knacks to create a spot-on bedroom look. You only need to look and appreciate with your eyes and heart to know what clicks and what doesn’t.

Are you an up-cycling maven? Prepare to be amazed by these 5 DIY pallet projects.

5 Ways to Upcycle Old Pallets

DIY style is all the rage these days; the perfect way to accomplish true DIY style at home is by adding a little upcycling magic to your furniture. Turning a discarded piece of rubbish into a piece of furniture, accessory for the home or simply art, is a great way to spend the weekend.

Making a blogging site has become as easy as setting up a Facebook account, with services like this offering you the chance to get online for next to nothing. The internet is full of the creative masterpieces made by DIY craft lovers. We love seeing blogs full of DIY designs, and have got some great ideas for up-cycling from our fellow crafty bloggers. It seems even a rubbish dump or building site can be a source of inspiration!

One item that is a fave amongst up-cycling connoisseurs is the pallet. Pallets are often free or cost very little, and with a touch of DIY skill, an old pallet can become a beautiful object. Here are some DIY pallet projects to try at home:

1. Picture Frames

Pallets are amazingly versatile and can be easily taken apart, leaving you with a selection of rustic slats. Once taken apart, cut to size, and varnished you could make a simple but stylish frame, with just a few tools. Top tip: if your pallet wood is dirty make sure you give it a good scrub with water and a stiff brush, and let it dry before doing anything else.

2. Coffee Table

If you would rather keep it simple, turning a pallet into a low coffee table is the easiest and classiest option. All it takes is some sanding and varnishing. You can paint it if you are feeling extra creative, or just leave it natural looking. Adding wheels to the bottom will give it height and prevent the risk of scratching up your floor.

3. Shelves

Gorgeously rustic shelves made from pallets will instantly give character to any room. Left a little chipped and worn, pallets can become shelves with strong character that makes a big statement.

4. Plate Rack

Simply by removing some of the slacks and attaching it to a wall, a pallet can become an efficient, and charming plate rack. Obviously will need some proper sanding first.

5. Daybed

For all you day time nappers out there, turn an old pallet into a cool daybed. After making it with your own two hands you will deserve that afternoon nap!
